** Rotary Shoulder Connections (RSC) are found on most components located throughout the drill string.
The integrity of the connections are critical to the drilling process as they are required to transmit torque,
tension and pressure from the top-drive down to the drill bit.
The threads of the connection must be protected in order to ensure integrity of the drill string. Many of the surfaces of the connection are also subjected to high stresses due to the large contact forces between mating threads and seal faces.
One of the best practices to protect these connections to help prevent failures and reduce the number of connections requiring shop repair is to properly clean and lubricate threads and shoulders on a regular basis. Another practice is to ensure open-ended thread protectors are in place at all times the pipe is not in use.
